‘Dear Evan Hansen’ Will Shuttle From D.C. To Off-Broadway’s Second Stage

The new musical Dear Evan Hansen, which opened last week to strong reviews at Washington’s Arena Stage, will have its New York premiere in spring, 2016 at the off-Broadway powerhouse Second Stage. The show, which concludes its D.C. run on August 23, currently stars Laura Dreyfuss and Ben Platt (Ricki And The Flash, Pitch Perfect) as troubled teens in the throes of adolescent angst who manage to find each other.

The musical has what Charles Isherwood in the New York Times called a “beguiling score” by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (whose Dogfight was a gem produced at Second Stage), and book by Steven Levenson (Showtime’s Masters of Sex). It’s staged by three-time Tony nominee Michael Greif (Rent, If/Then). Per Second Stage’s announcement, Dear Evan Hansen will open at its Tony Kiser Theatre in Times Square; exact dates, casting and complete creative team will be announced at a later date.

“The story of Evan Hansen couldn’t be more current or immediate and I am proud to present the New York Premiere of this powerful and moving new American musical,” said Second Stage Artistic Director Carole Rothman. “I’m also very much looking forward to welcoming Benj and Justin, with whom we so happily collaborated on Dogfight, and Michael Greif, who memorably staged Next to Normal for us, back to the Second Stage family.”
