‘Evolution’, Toronto-Bound Horror Pic, Acquired By Alchemy; ‘Somali Project’ Docks At Vladar Co.

Alchemy has acquired North American distribution rights to the French-language horror pic Evolution, helmed by Lucile Hadzihalilovic. It has been set to world premiere in the Vanguard section at next month’s Toronto Film Festival. Hadzihalilovic wrote the screenplay with Alanté Kavaïté and Geoff Cox and serves as Hadzihalilovic’s follow-up to her 2004 indie hit Innocence.

In the pic, 10-year-old Nicolas lives with his mother in a village on a remote island inhabited solely by women and young boys. In a hospital overlooking the ocean, all the boys are subjected to a mysterious medical treatment. Only Nicolas questions what is happening around him. He senses that his mother is lying to him, and is determined to find out what she does with the other women at night, on the beach. What he discovers is the beginning of a nightmare into which he is helplessly drawn. Max Brebant, Roxane Duran and Julie-Marie Parmentier star.

The France-Spain-Belgium co-production is produced by Les Films du Worso’s Sylvie Pialat and Benoît Quainon along with Noodles Production’s Jérôme Vidal, Volcano Films’ Sebastian Alvarez, Scope Pictures’ Geneviève Lemal, and Left Field Ventures’ John Engel. Jeff Deutchman, Alchemy’s VP Acquisitions, negotiated the deal with Carole Baraton of Wild Bunch on behalf of the filmmakers.

Somali ProjectThe Vladar Company (Generation Iron) has acquired U.S. and Canadian rights to The Somali Project, a documentary feature that follows the precarious, real-life story of a shadowy group of pirate hunters on a mission to stop hijackings and kidnappings in the waters off the Horn of Africa. The hunters face mutiny, murder, run afoul of the UN and eventually come face-to-face with elusive pirates in an extraordinary battle captured on film. Adam Ciralsky and Shawn Efran directed and produced and an October 2 release is planned.

The deal was made on behalf of the filmmakers by Jon Gursha and Peter Greene of Film Marketing Services and Edwin Mejia on behalf of The Vladar Company.
