Tony Optican Named Media General’s Head Of Programming

Media General has hired veteran TV exec Tony Optican has Head of Programming as the company further expands its push into original content. Optican is based in Los Angeles and reports to Deb McDermott, SVP and Chief Operating Officer.

In the newly created post, Optican is responsible for building the company’s content strategy across multiple platforms, while continuing to grow current programs such as BiteSizeTV’s Hollywood Today Live. The entertainment variety show is set to air in several of Fox TV’s markets, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and two-thirds of Media General’s markets, beginning September 14.

Optican began his programming career at MGM Worldwide Television Group, where he was involved in all phases of development for drama, comedy and reality series. He went on to serve as VP Current Programming for Fox Broadcasting Co, SVP Original Programming for the Syfy Channel, and head of scripted programming for FremantleMedia North America. He also formed his own media consultancy and production company that focused on content creation across television, digital and OTT platforms,
