Rob Lowe & Gabrielle Union Among Voice Cast For Disney Channel’s ‘The Lion Guard’ Movie

The Lion Guard: Return Of The Roar, a TV movie precursor to the upcoming The Lion Guard TV series, is set to premiere in November on Disney Channel with Rob Lowe, Gabrielle Union, Max Charles, Atticus Shaffer and Sarah Hyland among the voice cast. James Earl Jones and Ernie Sabella reprise their roles from the related The Lion King as Mufasa and Pumbaa, respectively.

The movie, a continuing of The Lion King tale, follows Kion, the second-born cub of Simba and Nala, as he assumes the role of leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals tasked with preserving the Pride Lands. The movie previews The Lion Guard TV series, premiering in early 2016 on Disney Channels and Disney Junior channels around the globe. A special preview of The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar will be presented at Disney’s D23 Expo on Sunday, August 16.

Cast includes Lowe (The Grinder) as Simba and Union (Being Mary Jane) as Nala. Charles (The Strain) stars as Kion, along with Joshua Rush (The Adventures of Puss in Boots) as Kion’s best friend and fearless honey badger Bunga; Shaffer (The Middle) as Ono, an intellectual egret; Diamond White (Sofia the First) as Fuli, a confident cheetah; and Dusan Brown (Blaze and the Monster Machines) as Beshte, a friendly hippo.

Set in the African Savanna, The Lion Guard: Return Of The Roar follows Kion as he assembles the Lion Guard, traditionally comprised of fiercest and bravest lions of the Pride Lands. Kion breaks tradition by calling upon a diverse team of animals to utilize each of their unique abilities.

The Education and Science experts at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park serve as consultants. Ford Riley (Special Agent Oso) developed the TV movie and series and serves as executive producer. Howy Parkins (Jake and the Never Land Pirates) is the director.

Additional cast members include Eden Riegel, Madison Pettis, Jeff Bennett, Andrew Kishino, Vargus Mason, Greg Ellis, Khary Payton and Kevin Schon. Disney TV Animation is the producer.
