David Threlfall Among ‘Ripper Street’ Additions; Main Cast Back For Season 4

Season 4 of Victorian era detective drama Ripper Street has begun shooting in Dublin with new faces added to the cast. Shameless star David Threlfall has boarded as a series regular joining the returning cast of Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn, Adam Rothenberg, MyAnna Buring and Charlene McKenna. The latest season will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Instant Video with dates to be set. Promised are “criminal and personal dramas that will revive and escalate the intense complexity”of the characters’ lives.

In Ripper Street, he’ll play Abel Croker, a wharfinger, villain and keeper of other men’s secrets.

Jonas Armstrong (Edge Of Tomorrow) will appear in a yet to be confirmed role. Lucy Cohu and Derek Riddell are reprising their roles from the first season.

The first and second season of Ripper Street aired on BBC One, but in late 2013, it was cancelled due to a drop in ratings. A few months later — and in a first for a UK series — Amazon swooped in to save the day, ordering a third season and taking SVOD rights to the previous two for its Prime Instant Video service. In May this year, it ordered two more seasons.

When Season 3 launched on Prime last November, it was streamed more than any other TV show, attracting larger viewing audiences than some of the biggest U.S. series on the service including The Walking Dead. Demonstrating the draw, it was also the most-watched first show among new subscribers.

Ripper Street is a Tiger Aspect and Lookout Point production in association with Brown Bear Films for Amazon and BBC Worldwide. It’s co-produced with BBC America.
