Jon Stewart Mocks Media Frenzy Over Report Of “Secret” White House Visits

Exiting The Daily Show host Jon Stewart made a surprise appearance on Comedy Central’s The Nightly Show to address a report about his having visited the White House.

The pretense of last night’s appearance was that Stewart is now Nightly Show’s Senior Don’t Give A Shit Any More Correspondent – his “exiting the job before it’s done” status making him the ideal faux journalist to cover Obama Unleashed, as some actual journalists have described Obama’s behavior as he enters his final year in office.

But, Stewart actually was stopping by Nightly to get asked about a report that Obama – who has used Stewart’s show as well as Between Two Ferns and other non-news outlets to speak to younger voters –  had called Stewart to the White House. Traditionally, presidents have asked Actual Journalists to come to the White House for private conversations they hope will affect how those Actual Journalists cover the White House. News that Obama had once again thought outside the box and had afforded Stewart the special treatment usually reserved for Actual Journalists was Big News inside the Beltway, when first reported by Politico.

“Is it true Obama called you to the White House, like twice, for secret meetings?” Nightly host Larry Wilmore asked sternly.

“I don’t know if they were secret,” Stewart said. “I’m in the visitors’ log, and they took pictures,” he said. He joked Obama just wanted to “hang,” eat nachos and watch King Ralph.

Asked if he thought it was “dangerous” for Obama to try to influence him and his jokes, Stewart snarked, “No. I think that’s what he’s trying to do, because I have a television show and sometimes we say sh*t about him and his policies.”
