No Word On ‘Sense8’ Season 2 But Wachowskis Plan To Keep Making Movies – TCA

In the wake of Andy and Lana Wachowski’s box office bombs Jupiter Ascending ($176M production cost, worldwide B.O. $181.9M) and Cloud Atlas ($100M budget, $130M global B.O.), one of the questions posed by a reporter at TCA today was whether the Sense8 co-creators had finally found their bliss with the Netflix formula: a format that unlike their films allows the Wachowskis to paint on a large visual, avant garde canvas without the high risks that come with theatrical releases. Essentially, have the Wachowskis traded feature filmmaking for longform series?

Said Sense8 EP Grant Hill, who has had a longstanding working relationship with the siblings from The Matrix sequels to Jupiter Ascending, “They are always going to go back and forth between formats, as they bring something new dramatically and actively to their stories. They’ll continue to explore boundaries. It’s an extension of their process doing (a series like Sense8) in a different format.”

In regards to Season 2 of the sci-fi series, despite the warm reception the EPs have received from fanboys at Comic-Con and the LGBT community, co-creator J. Michael Straczynski says, “We’re still waiting word for the final determination, but the talks have been optimistic. It’s Netflix’s call.”

Responding to whether there was a five-year plan for the show, and plot details, Straczynski said, “Heck, No! But we’re a long game kind of people. For ourselves, for the writing, we have to figure out where all this pays off. Season 1 is obviously about origins.”
