‘Pixels’ Chomps Abroad; Hits Records For Sony & Sandler In Argentina, France– Overseas B.O. Update

Sony’s Adam Sandler pic Pixels started its game overseas in 56 markets, which reps about 40% of all foreign markets. To date, the sci-fi comedy has racked up $26M overseas along with another $9.2M stateside for a current global cume of $35.2M. Stateside, Pixels looks to be on course for a FSS of $23.8M per industry calculations, which puts it at the lower end of Sandler bows (his best fare is north of $40M+ in regards to bows), but that’s not as low as last summer’s Blended ($14.3M) or 2012’s turkey That’s My Boy ($13.5M). Nonetheless, it’s going to need as many one-ups as it can overseas to hurdle past that $88M reported production cost and larger distrib and marketing expenses.

The opening for Pixels is strong in Latin America given the territory’s embrace of family fare, not to mention, they adore Sandler. In Brazil where Pixels made $605K, a number that’s 23% powered up over Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 1% above Guardians of the Galaxy. Ant-Man might be picking on Sandler here, but in Argentina, he’s crushing the tiny superhero’s bow. Pixels made $535K, 138% above Ant-Man and 46% more than Guardians of the Galaxy. Sony execs there can throw some more steaks on the grill: It’s the biggest opening day of all-time for any Sony release in Argentina. Chile made $116K, 71% above Guardian of the Galaxy, 115% above TMNT.  Columbia generated $106K, 2% above Ant-Man.

Similar to the U.S., Pixels is battling Ant-Man in Europe. Early returns show Sandler’s arcade game movie ahead of Ant-Man, but the outlook is still too close to call. France, the country where Jerry Lewis is a comedy god, gave Sandler his best opening day ever with $349K.

Pixels bowed on July 16 in South Korea making $3.3M in its first weekend, 8% below GOG. Through nine days, the Chris Columbus-directed film is at $4.2M, clicking past TMNT. Sandler also hit the Minions with a big mallet in Russia, kicking them out of the top spot of the B.O. for a $664K bow.
