‘She’s Funny That Way’ Trailer: A Love Hexagon On Broadway, With Punches

“Eight million people in New York, and it seems like everyone knows everyone.” Here’s the new trailer for the first film Peter Bogdanovich has directed in 13 years — not counting that four-hour Tom Petty documentary. The actor-helmer’s She’s Funny That Way, which he co-wrote with Louise Stratton, is a screwball comedy set behind the scenes of a Broadway show: A director (Owen Wilson) falls for a hooker-actress (Imogen Poots) and casts her in his new play — opposite his wife (Kathryn Hahn) and her former flame (Rhys Ifans). Meanwhile, the director’s therapist (Jennifer Aniston) is obsessed with her just-ended relationship with his playwright (Will Forte), who is dating the call girl. What could go wrong, right? (See the face-smack montage for your answer.) And watch for a Dangerfield-esque one-liner from cop Michael Shannon.

The flick, which reteams Marley & Me stars Wilson and Aniston, got lots of laughs when it played out of competition at Venice in August then earned buzz after a hush-hush screening for buyers at Toronto two weeks later. Lionsgate Premiere opens the film August 14 in theaters and on demand. Have a look and tell us what you think.
