‘Hannibal’ Fans Slam NBC Over Cancellation; Bryan Fuller Defends Network – Comic Con

NBC got blasted by fans of the cannibal TV series and received a rousing defense from the show’s EP tonight at Comic-Con.

When the recent cancellation of Hannibal by NBC was first brought up at the panel, the network was loudly booed. “Hey, NBC let us do some crazy shit for three years, they deserve our applause, executive producer Bryan Fuller immediately responded in the network’s defense.

Repping the show with Fuller were EP Martha De Laurentiis and cast members Hugh Dancy and Richard Armitage.

Fuller provided some reason for optimism for fans of the now-canceled drama and its future. “We are still looking,” said Fuller of finding a new a landing spot for the series. “There’s the possibility of a feature.” After a period of silence, the EP said they would really like to see Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy back. The actor said he would love to come back for more Hannibal.

The crowd was shown a trailer from the second half of Season 3. The nearly 5-minute clip showed Hannibal Lector (Mads Mikkelsen) in jail, Dancy’s Will Graham, Richard Armitage as the Red Dragon and Zachary Quinto in the show.

Always up close with its fanbase, Hannibal is handing out signed scripts, posters and t-shirts to audience members who ask questions – of which there are scores lining up at the microphones.

NBC confirmed in June it was not picking up a fourth season of the series based on the Thomas Harris novels. Not long after, Gaumont International Television let the options expire on stars Hugh Dancy and Mads Mikkelsen, opening the door to other film and TV offers for the duo and complicating efforts for a pickup of the show. While Netflix was always a remote possibility, Fuller announced last week that Amazon also passed on picking up the series. Since Amazon holds exclusive streaming rights to past and current seasons of the show, many believed it to be a natural fit for more of the series. Fuller already has moved on to his next series, Starz’s American Gods.
