EXCLUSIVE: Jaume Collet-Serra is circling to direct In The Deep for Sony Pictures. This is the spec script by Tony Jaswinski that created a feeding frenzy last fall when Sony beat out three other studios to win the project. The film will be produced by former Warner Bros executive Lynn Harris and Matti Leshem; it was the first project they set up under their new producing shingle Weimaraner Republic Pictures.
At the time Deadline broke news of the spec, it was described as tonally similar to a cross between 127 Hours and Jaws, with a touch of Gravity thrown in for good measure. A young woman who is dealing with the recent death of her mother is surfing on an isolated beach and gets stranded 20 yards off shore on a buoy. What lies between her and the shore is a huge great white shark. It’s an emotional piece for a young twentysomething star.
Collet-Serra, the Spanish director who popped in the U.S. with Orphan, followed with three Liam Neeson films: Unknown, Non-Stop and Run All Night. No deal yet, but Collet-Serra has the offer and they’re in early talks. stay tuned. He’s repped by CAA and Management 360.
