ABC Family Supernatural Pilot ‘Beyond’ Sets Cast

Callan McAuliffe, who played the young Jay Gatsby in Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, has been cast as the lead in ABC Family’s supernatural drama pilot Beyond, which is now set to begin production next week in Vancouver. The pilot centers on a young man named Holden who wakes up from a coma after 12 years and discovers he is emotionally still a teenager, physically an adult and possessed with supernatural abilities that propel him into the middle of a dangerous conspiracy. It was ordered in April and signals the network’s slight turn toward genre fare, with Beyond joining the Mortal Instruments spinoff series Shadowhunters.

Joining McAuliffe (Homeland) in the cast is Jordan Calloway (Switched At Birth) as Holden’s childhood best friend Kevin, now a therapist, who is haunted by guilt after the incident that put Holden in a coma; Dilan Gwyn (DaVinci’s Demons) as Willa, a woman who appears to be interested in Holden, and who warns him he is in great danger; Romy Rosemont (Glee) as Holden’s mother Diane, who has refused to give up on Holden throughout his coma and now is determined to protect him; Michael McGrady (Ray Donovan) as Holden’s father Tom, who is emotionally withdrawn after his son’s ordeal and defers to Diane; and Burkely Duffield (The Tomorrow People) as Holden’s clever younger brother Luke, who grew up in the shadow of his brother’s tragedy and is now faced with a brother who knows less about the world than he does.

Beyond is created, written and executive produced by Adam Nussdorf (Once Upon A Time In Wonderland). Tim Kring, Zak Kadison, Justin Levy and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones are executive producers of the Imperative Entertainment and Automatik production. It marks the first pilot order for Imperative, the production company Kring, Kadison and longtime Farrelly brothers producer Bradley Thomas launched last year with financing from Dan Friedkin and his Friedkin Group.
