Soft ‘Grey’ Goes Green Fast As Vintage Pumps Out 2.1M Copies

Demonstrating that Jurassic World isn’t the only insatiable-monster hit of the new summer season, it only took four days for E.L. James’ Grey: Fifty Shades of Grey As Told By Christian to ring up sales of more than 1.1 million copies in trade paperback, eBook, and audio editions. “This is an astonishing number of books to sell over a weekend and speaks to the engagement and passion readers have for the Fifty Shades books,” Anne Messitte, publisher of Vintage Anchor, said in an announcement today. “Christian’s side of the story is proving to be irresistible.”

In response, Vintage has gone back to press for third, fourth and fifth printings of the alt-view re-creation of the original Fifty Shades Of Grey. The process required engaging multiple plants to churn out the book and brings the total number of copies in print to 2.1 million, per Vintage. James announced the June 18 pub date of the $15.95 paperback via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts.

Vintage is an imprint of the Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group, which is a division of Penguin Random House, LLC, a subsidiary of Bertelsmann AG.
