‘San Andreas’ Cracks $400M Worldwide

Coming off of an $18.8M international weekend, New Line/Village Roadshow/Warner BrosSan Andreas now has a global gross of $414.2M, with Japan, Spain and South Africa yet to open. The Dwayne Johnson action thriller has thus far rocked $132.2M domestically and $282M in offshore markets since beginning roll out on May 27. It crossed the $400M mark this frame, it was announced by Warner’s Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution.

The film has shown great strength overseas, particularly in Latin America and Asia. In Mexico, San Andreas is the highest-grossing disaster film of all time, and this weekend has become the biggest WB release ever in the market — overtaking Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows – Part 2. The local total is $28.1M. After 20 days in China, its cume is $92.5M for WB’s 4th highest-grosser in the Middle Kingdom. Korea has a $12.7M total and Brazil is at $10.1M.

Domestically, San Andreas is WB’s 2nd biggest title among films released in 2015, just behind Mad Max: Fury Road which has a $143.6M cume. Globally, it’s ahead of that film with a heftier offshore haul, although Max just shot past the $200M mark overseas, bringing its cume to $202.5M.

In San Andreas, Johnson, who was 2013’s biggest grossing international star, plays a search and rescue helicopter pilot who embarks on a treacherous journey from LA to San Francisco with his estranged wife to save their only daughter following a 9+ magnitude earthquake. Carla Gugino, Alexandra Daddario, Ioan Gruffudd, Archie Panjabi and Paul Giamatti also star in the Brad Peyton-helmed pic. The screenplay is from Lost‘s Carlton Cuse, with the story by Andre Fabrizio and Jeremy Passmore.
