‘Game Of Thrones’ Ratings Hit All-Time High In Season 5 Finale

Looks like Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors didn’t lay a hand on the Night’s Watch. Despite being up against a very well watched Game 5 of the NBA Finals, the Season 5 finale of the blockbuster HBO series based on George R. R. Martin’s novel shattered its own records on Sunday night. The murderous “Mother’s Mercy” episode of Game of Thrones was watched by an average of 8.1 million total viewers on June 14.

That ekes out a victory over the previous GoT record holder of the 7.99 million who watched the Season 5 opener on April 12. It also tops last week’s viewership by 13% in what had been a bit of roller coaster viewership cycle for the David Benioff and D.B. Weiss EP’d fantasy drama. Compared to the Season 4 finale, Sunday’s GoT, which saw a slew of characters meet their end, rose 14% to be the most watched finale the show has ever had.

Renewed for a fifth and sixth season in April 2014, GoT is expected back in early 2016 – without Jon Snow.
