Gil Cates Jr. Gets Exec Director’s Nameplate At Geffen Playhouse

Cates, vice-chairman of the prominent nonprofit theater founded in 1995 by his father, has been named executive director after leading in an interim capacity since February. “On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are delighted to announce Gil as Executive Director,” board Co-Chairs Martha Henderson and Pamela Robinson Hollander said in the announcement. “His experience in theater, film and television production and direction, combined with his passion for the Geffen, make him an ideal choice. He will also be a great partner to artistic director Randall Arney, leading into our 20th anniversary season.”

imagesOriginally led by Cates pere and underwritten by entertainment mogul David Geffen, the theater, on the UCLA campus in Westwood, quickly established itself as an alternative to the downtown Mark Taper Forum, L.A.’s best-known nonprofit theater. It’s attracted a first-class roster of talent and in recent years partnered with the Manhattan Theatre Club on such productions as last season’s The Country House, by Donald Margulies, starring Blythe Danner.
