Evan Handler & Russell Hornsby Round Out ‘The Breaks’ Cast

Evan Handler (Californication) and Russell Hornsby (Grimm) are the latest to join the cast of VH1’s original hip-hop movie The Breaks. Production is underway in NY for a late fall premiere.

Based on Dan Charnas’ nonfiction book The Big Payback: The History Of the Business Of Hip-Hop, The Breaks chronicles the journey of Nikki (Afton Williamson), David (David Call) and DeeVee (Mack Tristan Wilds), three friends united by their love of hip-hop as they work to make their big mark in the music industry. The film is set in 1990 New York City where the music industry’s artists and hustlers intersect in the dance clubs and street corners of the still crime-ridden city.

APA-repped Handler will play Jonah “Juggy” Aaron, David’s father and legendary promo man and music publisher. He’s a businessman with a charming personality, but a not so hidden immorality – he’s more than willing to pull a few strings to get what he needs. Hornsby is Sampson Green, the silky smooth radio host and program director at WPPS, New York’s No. 1 R&B station. Sampson is an arrogant, old school celebrity radio host hell-bent on keeping rap and hip-hop off his station so he can keep more aspirational music on the airwaves. He’s repped by ICM and Cohn Torgan Management. The pair join previously announced cast Wood Harris, Mack (Tristan) Wilds, Afton Williamson, David Call, Antoine Harris and Method Man.

Seith Mann (The Wire) writes, directs and executive produces, with Charnas and Maggie Malina also exec producing. Darren Goldberg will exec produce for Atlantic Pictures. VH1 executive producers are Susan Levison and Bill Flanagan. Multiple Grammy-winner DJ Premier will compose the score and serve as executive music producer.
