Duggar Interviews Boost Fox News’ Ratings For Week; Second Best On Cable

There were no breaking news stories of riots nor big announcements from Hillary Clinton or Marco Rubio but for the cable news network it was almost as good a week as when they were last in the top cable spot back in late April. With an average audience of 1.64 million for the week of June 1-7, Fox News Channel was just a hair behind USA Network’s 1.65 million to have cable’s biggest primetime audience. With three climbs to the No. #1 spot this year so far, last week is the 10th time this year that FNC has hit that No. #2 viewership mark – but those previous highs almost always came in weeks of big breaking news.

Up 12% in viewers over the week before, it is pretty clear that Megyn Kelly’s exclusive interviews with the parents and two of the sisters/victim of 19 Kids And Counting’s Josh Duggar was fueling a lot of FNC’s traction. Of course, The O’Reilly Factor and Hannity were strong in weekday primetime plus good numbers demo (377,000) and total viewership ((1.37 million) for docu-series Legends & Lies on the usual Saturday cable news wasteland made the whole week competitive for FNC. In contrast, cable news rivals MSNBC was in 27th place in primetime with 519,000 while CNN was 33rd among viewers in the 8 – 11 PM period last week with 443,000, according to Nielsen.

But the Duggars were the ones that delivered for Fox.

The Kelly File’s sit downs with the reality TV family over the revelations that the eldest Duggar son molested five girls when he was a teen, including four of his sisters, saw the show hit its third best weekly demo results since its premiere in October of 2013. With an average of 550,000 viewers among adults 25-54, The Kelly File Duggar interviews only came behind 1.117 million in the new demo that tuned in for Kelly File coverage of the unrest in Ferguson, Missouri in late November last year and the 569,000 among adults 25-54 who watched the protests in Baltimore in April this year.

Here is a look at the Top 5 most watch channels on cable in primetime last week – it was a tight race among the first three:

1. USA – 1.653 million
2. FNC -1.640 million
3 HGTV – 1.636 million
4. History – 1.526 million
5. TBS – 1. 388 million
