Scribe Michael Mitnick To Direct ‘Some Are Born Great’ In Helming Debut

EXCLUSIVE: Michael Mitnick has made his mark as co-writer on last year’s The Giver as well as two hot scripts currently in the works for movies: the 2011 Black List script The Current War (now at The Weinstein Company) and Pinocchio for Robert Downey Jr and Warner Bros. Now he is set to jump behind the camera for the first time, sealing a deal to make his feature directorial debut with Some Are Born Great, to be produced by Peter Saraf and Marc Turtletaub at Big Beach.

The plot is being kept quiet, but the movie is a contemporary comedy in the vein of Groundhog Day. Leah Holzer and Dani Melia are executive producing with Bryan Haas.

Mitnick has another script, Memoirs Of An Imaginary Friend, set up at Whalerock and Four By Two with Sacha Baron Cohen attached to star, and his musical Fly By Night that he co-wrote was nominate for four Drama Desk Awards. He now is an executive story editor on HBO’s rock ‘n’ roll drama series from Terry Winter, Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese.

Big Beach just sold Three Generations — starring Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon and Elle Fanning — to The Weinstein Company at Cannes. That pic comes out September 18.

Mitnick is repped by WME, Grandview and Sloane Offer, Weber and Dern.
