‘Love & Mercy’ Rides High, ‘Testament Of Youth’ & ‘Pigeon’ OK: Specialty B.O.

Brian Wilson surfed a fairly wide bow and landed decently, while Testament Of Youth and the long titled A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence opened respectably in limited runs. Indian title Dil Dhadakne Do opened with solid numbers. And Bleecker Street maintained momentum with I’ll See You In My Dreams in a fourth weekend expansion. And Rocky Mountain Pictures opened controversial doc An Open Secret, which screened at last year’s DocNYC festival. The distributor, which opened 2012 box office hit doc 2016: Obama’s America, said An Open Secret floundered in its theatrical debut in Denver and Seattle, but declined to provide numbers.

Roadside Attractions/Lionsgate opened Love & Mercy on Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson Friday with a fairly hefty debut. The feature starring John Cusack, Elizabeth Banks, Paul Dano and Paul Giamatti grossed an estimated $2.22M in 483 theaters, averaging $4,601, placing 11th in the overall box office. The Beach Boys movie has also beached three of its albums in iTunes’ top 100 as well. “The film received an A- Cinemascore, boding well for positive word of mouth, and in line with that the film had an uptick of 42% from Friday to Saturday,” Roadside’s Howard Cohen said this morning via email. “Exits showed the audience to be mostly over 25, but interestingly spread among Baby Boomers, Gen-X, and Millennials, who all probably experienced the Beach Boys and Brian Wilson in different ways.” Cohen said Love & Mercy is “playing well in both mainstream and art house theaters,” buoyed by its 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Love & Mercy will expand slowly over the summer.
