Judge Tosses College Athletes’ Class Action Against ESPN, WME & Networks

Game over. A Tennessee judge today dismissed a lawsuit in which 10 college football and basketball players sought a share of TV money paid to ESPN, ABC, Fox, CBS and NBC. The action, filed in October in federal court, claimed that the networks and others — including WME and IMG — “have profited from the broadcast and use of Student Athletes’ names, likenesses and images without the Student Athletes’ permission. But U.S. District Judge Kevin Sharp sent the suit to the showers, saying the players didn’t offer up sufficient reasons why they are entitled to the cash.
