‘Orange’ Jailbird Danielle Brooks Heads To Broadway’s ‘Color Purple’

Danielle Brooks, who plays tough-and-vulnerable “Taystee” Jefferson on Orange Is The New Black, will make her Broadway debut playing Sofia in the upcoming fall revival of The Color Purple headlined by Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) and Cynthia Erivo. The production is a transfer of director John Doyle’s (The Visit) minimalist take on the show, which had an acclaimed run at London’s Menier Chocolate Factory in summer 2013.

The 2005 musical is based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and the Warner Bros/Amblin Entertainment film, with a book by Marsha Norman (‘Night, Mother) and score by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray. It’s slated to begin previews on November 9 at the Shubert-owned Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre, with opening night on December 10. The lead producers are Scott Sanders, Roy Furman, Oprah Winfrey, David Babani and Tom Siracusa.
