‘Louder Than Bombs’ Gabriel Byrne On Why Indies Are Better Than Big Budget Films – Video

Norwegian director Joachim Trier has been to Cannes before, with his hit Oslo, August 31st, but he returns this year as part of the Official Selection for the first time. Louder Than Bombs is also his English-language debut, and it stars Gabriel Byrne, Isabelle Huppert, Jesse Eisenberg and Devin Druid. The story follows the men of the family coming to terms with the death of Huppert’s character, a war photographer. Trier and Byrne stopped by Deadline’s Cannes studio at Nikki Beach’s Le Petit Bar at the Carlton Hotel to talk about the film and reflect on what Cannes offers independent cinema. Says Byrne, “The thing about big budget scripts…the problem there is that you tend to work in stereotypes: There’s the good guy, the bad guy, the wife saying ‘don’t do it – it’s too dangerious’. You have to have recognizable figures. When you go to the world of independent cinema, you get more dimensional figures that are more challenging.”
