Anton Yelchin Talks ‘Star Trek 3’, Punk Band Horror ‘Green Room’ – Cannes

Jeremy Saulnier’s Blue Ruin came to Cannes out of nowhere two years ago to announce the arrival of a new talent looking at film in a different way. He’s back, now, channeling Sam Peckinpah with Green Room, a horror thriller that stars Patrick Stewart, Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat and Anton Yelchin.

For Yelchin, who stopped by Deadline’s Cannes studio at Nikki Beach’s Le Petit Bar to run me through the project, playing a bass player in a punk band seemed like it might be fun. “If there’s one person in the band that could die and you could still play the show, it’d be the bass player,” Yelchin told Deadline. Not too dissimilar, then, from the red-shirted ensigns on Star Trek away missions who beam down to the planet for the sole purpose of becoming cannon fodder for the alien of the week. Yelchin is gearing up to reprise the role of Chekov in Star Trek 3. “I feel like the new films handle an energy that’s close to [the original] series,” he says. “I’m really looking forward to having that fun again.”
