‘Amy’ Trailer: New Look At Amy Winehouse Doc That’s Stunned Cannes

Asif Kapadia’s Amy had an Out of Competition Midnight Screening here in Cannes last week and is easily one of the films receiving the most praise across the Official Selection. The documentary about Amy Winehouse stunned in its premiere and is gearing up for a July 3 release in both the U.S. and the UK, via A24 and Altitude, respectively. The film is the tragic and remarkable story of the six-time Grammy-winner and features extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks.

Winehouse captured the world’s attention with her unique style, but invasive media attention coupled with her troubled relationships and precarious lifestyle saw her life begin to unravel. She died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.

Deadline’s Pete Hammond wrote on Saturday of Amy, “To say I was blown away by this movie is an understatement. An early frontrunner for the 2015 Best Documentary Oscar? There can be do doubt.” Kapadia won a Best Documentary BAFTA for 2010’s Senna, the biopic of Formula 1 legend Aryton Senna who died in a tragic accident at age 34.
