Universal Intl Warms To Sierra/Affinity’s ‘The Coldest City’ – Cannes

Charlize Theron-starrer The Coldest City was among the hot projects coming into this Cannes market. A few days before the proceedings kicked off, Focus Features pounced on North American rights to the spy thriller that’ll be directed by John Wick helmers David Leitch and Chad Stahelski and which is backed by Sierra/Affinity’s Nick Meyer. In Cannes, Sierra/Affinity saw offshore action that includes a multi-territory acquisition by Universal Pictures International Productions. UPIP took Australia/New Zealand, Benelux, China, France, Germany, Italy, Latin America, Switzerland and the UK.

Theron plays a super spy who springs into action after an underground MI6 officer is killed just before the fall of the Berlin Wall. She must find a list he was smuggling into the West to protect herself and the counter intelligence community. It becomes a game of double-crossing as agents play out global agendas.

Other titles that are selling out in what S/A calls its strongest market ever include Blake Lively-starrer All I See Is You which found buyers in Korea and Italy, among others while Chris Pine-starrer Comancheria went to Wild Bunch in a multi-territory pact. Ric Roman Waugh’s Shot Caller was scooped up by Constantin in German-speaking Europe, eOne in the UK and Sun Distribution in Latin America, among others; Joel Edgerton’s The Gift was acquired by Village Roadshow Down Under, Lionsgate UK, and more; and Liam Neeson-starrer A Willing Patriot was also acquired by Sun for Lat Am and Spain, and sold in Italy, Scandinavia, France and German-speaking European markets, among others.
