‘Carol’ & ‘Youth’ Producers On “The Expectation Of Showing In Cannes” – Video

Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley are among Britain’s most accomplished film producers. Through their company Number 9 Films, they’ve been behind some of the country’s most successful indies — movies including The Crying Game, How To Lose Friends And Alienate People and a pair of projects at this year’s Canness. One is Carol, based on the Patricia Highsmith novel The Price Of Salt, which premiered last night to a generous standing ovation. Karlsen took the lead on the Todd Haynes project, which stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. They’re also involved in Paolo Sorrentino’s Youth, with Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel.

For Woolley, this is his 35th year in Cannes, since his early days buying movies for former distributor Palace Pictures, where he discovered the first works by directors like Neil Jordan. Stopping by Deadline’s interview studio at Nikki Beach’s Le Petit Bar at the Carlton, Woolley and Karlsen sat down to talk about these movies and what makes Cannes special.
