‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’ Solid In Limited Bow, ‘Welcome To Me,’ ‘Adult Beginners’ Cash In Via VOD: Specialty Box Office
The sizzle remains firmly with the major studios this weekend, but it’s that time of year. Bleecker Street generated a little pizzazz with I’ll See You In My Dreams, which had the weekend’s second best per screen average. Other specialty newcomers managed OK to tepid debuts. Janus Films’ packaged restoration release of Indian master Satyajit Ray’s coming of age trilogy The Apu Trilogy held solid in its second weekend. And kudos to distributor Alchemy for providing some insight in its VOD grosses. Its Welcome To Me has taken in $510K in its first week on-demand, while another multiplatform player RADiUS has downloaded $554K via VOD for Adult Beginners.
I’ll See You In My Dreams marked Bleecker Street’s second release after Danny Collins. Dreams‘ PTA of $16,447 (from three locations) was slightly ahead of the earlier movie’s debut in 5 locations in March with a $72,459 gross, averaging $14,492. That film has now cumed over $5.4M. Dreams‘ PTA was second to Pitch Perfect 2‘s $20,250.
“The film played very well to the core older audience, 40-50-plus,” Bleecker Street’s Jack Foley said today. “They flocked to the late matinee and first prime shows to sellout levels. The film picked up 70%-plus in box office volume from Friday to Saturday in New York City, a great sign of momentum and matinee sales in addition to late matinee and prime sales. L.A. is selling well across the board with [over $18K] in 2 days.” In coming weeks Bleecker Street will add major markets including San Francisco, Boston, Chicago, Washington, D.C., Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Minneapolis, West Palm Beach/Boca Raton and Dallas.
IFC Films opened Good Kill with 2 runs Friday, placing second as of this afternoon among the new Specialties. The feature grossed $17,200 for an $8,600 average. Reporting its numbers today, IFC Films said, “Good Kill was extremely well-received by both critics and the political media. We’re confident the timeliness of the subject matter will help it reach a wide audience.”
Drafthouse opened French crime-drama The Connection in 2 locations, grossing $9,800 ($4,900 PTA), slightly topping its fellow French crime-drama In The Name Of My Daughter in averages, which bowed in 3 theaters grossing $14,294 ($4,765 PTA). Oscilloscope’s Animals also opened this weekend, grossing $12K in 10 theaters ($1,200 PTA).
In holdovers, Focus World’s 5 Flights Up grossed $181K ($1,926 PTA) in its second weekend, topping a $506K cume. Janus Films’ The Apu Trilogy is still robust at New York’s Film Forum, grossing over $13K in one theater. SPC added a dozen runs for Bertrand Bonello’s Saint Laurent, grossing just above $38K for a $2,380 PTA. And IFC Films’ The D Train chugged along, shedding 847 locations in its second frame. The feature grossed $19,764 in 162 theaters, averaging a measly $122.
Fox Searchlight added 190 runs for Far From The Madding Crowd in its third weekend, grossing $1.3M, giving the feature a solid $4,498 PTA. Last weekend, the film, directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Carey Mulligan, grossed almost $761K in 99 theaters, averaging $7,684.
