Matthew McConaughey’s ‘The Sea of Trees’ Is Acquired For U.S. By Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions – Cannes

EXCLUSIVE– Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are teaming up to acquire domestic rights on the Matthew McConaughey-starring The Sea Of Trees. The film, which also stars Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts, follows Arthur Brennan (McConaughey), who treks into Aokigahara, known as the Sea of Trees, a mysterious dense forest at the base of Japan’s Mount Fuji where people go to contemplate life and death. After finding a place to commit suicide, Arthur meets Takumi Nakamura (Watanabe), a Japanese man who is also lost in life. The two commence on a journey of reflection, which reinforces Arthur’s will to live and rekindle his love with his wife (Watts).

The producers of The Sea Of Trees are two-time Oscar nominated producer Gil Netter (Life Of Pi), Kevin Halloran with Kao, and F. Gary Gray, Brian Dobbins, and Allen Fischer. Chris Sparling wrote the script and is also producing.

CAA and WME Global brokered the deal.

The picture, which is being sold internationally by Bloom and was financed by Ken Kao, was screened a few weeks ago. Lionsgate owns a minority stake in Roadside and the two companies have enjoyed success in the past together on titles such as Arbitrage and Margin Call.
