Legendary’s Asylum Entertainment (The Kennedys) and Craig Piligian’s Pilgrim Studios (Ghost Hunters) are teaming to produce an event sports documentary series that explores sports on a global scale. Tentatively titled Planet Sport, and reminiscent of BBC series Planet Earth, the series will examine how sports shape and reflect cultures, societies, identities and communities throughout the world. Asylum’s Steven Michaels and Jonathan Koch, Piligian and David Michaels will executive produce along with Legendary Chairman and CEO Thomas Tull.
Each installment of Planet Sport focuses on one universal sporting theme, such as glory, fear, rivalry, endurance, teamwork. The series will draw on archival and contemporary footage, along with testimonials of noted athletes and other sports luminaries, and will incorporate technology and visual arts.
“Planet Sport promises to bring to life sports in a way that audiences around the world have never experienced,” said Steve Michaels, President, Asylum Entertainment.
Added Piligian, “This series will do for sports what series like Planet Earth did for nature – a sweeping, moving, and beautiful depiction of something that unites us all because it’s so integral to the human experience.”
Asylum Entertainment’s upcoming miniseries about Marilyn Monroe’s turbulent relationship with her schizophrenic mother (Susan Sarandon), premieres on Lifetime this month. Pilgrim Studios’ series also include Fast N’ Loud, Misfit Garage, Street Outlaws, The Ultimate Fighter and Swamp Pawn.
