‘Mom’ Ratings Steady In Finale, Univision Ties NBC & Tops Fox In Demo, ‘Blacklist’ & Backstrom’ Down

The first full week of May sweeps has the finales coming fast and furious and last night was no exception with the Season 2 end of CBS’ Mom (2.0/7) and freshman Backstrom (0.7/2) on Fox. Facing Day 1 of the 2015 NFL Draft on ESPN and NBA playoffs, the Allison Janney and Anna Faris- starring sitcom bopped up 5%, both from last week and from its Season 1 finale of April 14 last year, which was a Monday.

Mom was picked up for a third season in March but for Backstrom, the end was nigh last night in more than one way. Down 13% among adults 18-49 from its April 23rd show, the comedy just never found its footing over its run and almost certainly will not be returning. It wasn’t a much better Thursday for Bones (0.9/3), Fox’s lead-in to Backstrom last night. The long-running procedural tumbled 10% from last week to hit a series low in preliminary numbers.

Coming off the spike from the departure of original cast member Patrick Dempsey last week, it was almost inevitable that Grey’s Anatomy (2.6/7) would be down last night. Surprisingly, heading towards the Season 11 May 14 finale, the 2-hour episode last night dipped just 7% compared to the April 23 telecast. That lead-in gave limited series American Crime (1.0/3) an 11% lift after last week’s double-digit fall. All said and done, ABC won the night among the key demo with a 2.0/7 rating. CBS was second among adults 18-49 with a 1.9/3 rating while Univision tied NBC with a 0.9/3 and topped Fox’s 0.8/3 result

As ABC took the 18-49 top spot, CBS snagged the overall viewership win with an audience of 8.85 million tuning in. That was led by The Big Bang Theory (3.2/12), which while down 11% from last week, was the top-rated and most watched show of the night with a viewership of 13.45 million. Otherwise, including that Mom finale, CBS’ Thursday was pretty steady with The Odd Couple (2.0/7) even with last week and Elementary slipping 8%.

The fall was further on The CW last night with The Vampire Diaries (0.52) sliding 17% from last week to a series low in early numbers. Lead-out Reign (0.3/1) didn’t take a hit but it didn’t gain any ground either and remains even in fast nationals with the low of its April 23 show.

Over on NBC, there was no upside to a whole lot of Blacklisting. At 9 PM, The Blacklist (1.2/4) crumbled 20% from last week to hit a new series low in fast nationals. Lead-out Dateline: Real Blacklists (0.9/3) was even with its April 23 show. NBC started its Thursday with a Blacklist (0.5/2) encore.
