Hailee Steinfeld To Star In ‘Break My Heart 1,000 Times’

Hailee Steinfeld is set to star in supernatural romantic thriller Break My Heart 1,000 Times for Gold Circle Films. Based on the YA novel by Daniel Waters, Break My Heart is described as a combination of The Fault In Our Stars and The Sixth Sense and is considered a springboard for a possible franchise. Jason Fuchs will adapt the screenplay and Scott Speer is attached to direct.

It’s set following a cataclysmic event that has torn the barrier between our world and the next, leaving ‘Remnants’, ghost-like essences of the deceased, part of everyday life. After years of quiet coexistence with the living, a Remnant sends a threatening message to a young girl, propelling her on a mission with consequences that will forever change the course of her life.

Steinfeld, who was Oscar-nominated for her role in True Grit, is reuniting the Gold Circle following her co-starring role in Universal/Gold Circle’s Pitch Perfect 2, which opens wide May 15. She also has a turn in A24’s upcoming Barely Lethal and is about to begin shooting the title role in indie Carrie Pilby. Her recent film credits include Begin Again and Ender’s Game.

Speer made his feature debut with Step Up Revolution, which grossed some $140 million worldwide for Summit/Lionsgate. He recently helmed the pilot and other episodes of MTV’s Finding Carter series, now in its second season. Speer also recently set up Rebecca Sonnenshine’s spec Realm at Relativity, and also is authoring the Immortal City trilogy of YA novels.

Fuchs’ writing credits include Ice Age: Continental Drift and the upcoming Joe Wright-directed Pan for Warner Bros, which is set for release on October 9. He’s currently writing DC Comics’ Wonder Woman, also for WB. Fuchs is repped by Brookside Artist Management and WME.

Paul Brooks is producing Break My Heart, with Scott Niemeyer, Brad Kessell and Fuchs executive producing. Good Universe will handle international sales. Gold Circle is about to start work on My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, in partnership with Universal, Tom Hanks’ Playtone Productions and HBO Films.
