Chris Brancato Inks Overall Deal With ABC Studios, Joins ‘Kings and Prophets’ Pilot

Veteran producer Chris Brancato has signed an overall deal with ABC Studios. Under the pact, Brancato has joined the studio’s ABC drama pilot Of Kings And Prophets as executive producer.

The project is still in the pilot stage but I hear the intention is for Brancato to serve as showrunner. The idea is to set up a writers room and work on scripts (I heard as many as 15) towards a potential straight-to-series order.

Written by feature scribes Adam Cooper and Bill Collage (Exodus), Of Kings And Prophets is described as an epic Biblical saga of faith, ambition and betrayal as told through the eyes of a battle-weary king (Ray Winstone), a powerful and resentful prophet and a resourceful young shepherd on a collision course with destiny. Brancato, Cooper and Collage executive produce alongside Jason Reed, Reza Aslan and Mahyad Tousi. The pilot, directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff, was filmed in South Africa.

This marks Brancato’s return to ABC Studios. Brancato/Salke, his former partnership with producer Bert Salke, was based at ABC Studios for half of decade before the two went their separate ways in 2010 — Salke headed to the executive ranks and now runs Fox 21 TV Studios, while Brancato focused on showrunning. He served as showrunner on Law & Order: Criminal Intent and recently executive produced Hannibal and Narcos for Gaumont International TV.
