MTV Movie Awards Takes A Ratings Tumble

Marking Amy Schumer’s first major hosting gig, and a move back to 8 PM, Sunday’s MTV Movie Awards took a nosedive, attracting an average of 1.55 million in its premiere. Last year at this time, only one hour later, about 2.84 million people tuned in to the Conan O’Brien-hosted trophy show. Back then, that was considered not good – a 27% tumble from the previous year’s crowd of 3.77 million. That 2013 show had been up compared with the previous year’s 3.2 million, even though big winner Jennifer Lawrence didn’t show up, and Parks And Recreation’s Aubrey Plaza got thrown out.

The franchise’s ratings news this morning was no better, demo-wise. An average of 680,000 viewers in the 18-34 bracket tuned in Sunday night, compared with 1.45 million one year ago and 1.79 million two years back. Slightly older 18-49 age bracket logged 984,000 viewers – down nearly a million viewers compared with last year’s 1.95 million; two years ago the trophy show enjoyed a demo crowd of 2.47 million.
