Punxsutawney is coming to Broadway. The production team behind Matilda is mounting a musical adaptation of the hit Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day. The movie is a favorite among fans of Murray, who plays a weatherman who winds up in a time loop that dooms him to relive his February 2 assignment to cover the big day in Punxsutawney, Pa. It’s set to open March 9, 2017.
Groundhog Day‘s book will be written by Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the script for the 1993 movie with director Harold Ramis. The musical will be produced by Whistle Pig Productions, Scott Rudin and Columbia Live Stage. Also collaborating will be Matilda composer-lyricist Tim Minchin, director Matthew Warchus, choreographer Peter Darling and set and costume designer Rob Howell.
