What Do Bill O’Reilly And Keith Olbermann Have In Common? Union Owes Them Cash

Bill O’Reilly has been distracted lately, so it’s no surprise he has overlooked the fact that SAG-AFTRA owes him money. Same with such familiar TV faces as his archnemesis Keith Olbermann, Savannah Guthrie and Chris Wallace. They and dozens of other well-known newscasters around the country, living and dead, are listed on SAG-AFTRA’s Unclaimed Residuals webpage.

It’s the kind of thing on which bitterly divided political rivals such as ex-Crossfire hosts Newt Gingrich and Van Jones can agree. Both are owed money, along with cable newsies including Gregg Jarrett, David Asman, Tucker Carlson and Greg Gutfeld; CNN series hosts Anthony Bourdain, Morgan Spurlock and Bill Weir; and morning regulars Amy Bobach and Hoda Kotb. Check out the full list here.

“Residuals are not common for broadcasters,” a guild spokesperson said, “and usually are not a result of their primary employment but rather clips of their work being used in entertainment programs. SAG-AFTRA works hard to reach out to members to get problems resolved so that the stream of residuals can continue uninterrupted.” In many cases, the spokesperson said, residuals can’t be delivered because of “conflicting or outdated instructions about where to send residuals, and sometimes it simply takes them or their representatives some time to complete simple paperwork confirming a proper addresses to deliver payment.”

While it might not be too tough to find those who are on the air every day, it’s tougher to track down the heirs of such broadcasting legends as Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Eric Severeid, Edwin Newman, Charles Kuralt and Tim Russert, — all of whom have dough sitting in the SAG-AFTRA coffers. Also on the list are such late Los Angeles TV news icons as Jerry Dunphy, Hal Fishman, Clete Roberts and the grandfather of Southland news, George Putnam.
