Ryan Reynolds Reveals Deadpool Costume With Burt Reynolds Parody

Three months after Ryan Reynolds finally sealed the deal to star in a stand-alone Deadpool movie, he’s revealed the first look at the Merc with the Mouth’s costume. Earlier today on Twitter, the erstwhile Van Wilder tweeted the this image:

If it looks familiar, it should. Capitalizing on their shared last names, that image is a highly accurate re-creation of Burt Reynolds’ notorious 1972 nude Cosmo centerfold. Just to make the comparison clear, Reynolds quickly followed his earlier tweet with this:

A sarcastic gun-for-hire and mutant, Deadpool was created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld for Marvel Comics in 1991. Starting out as a gritty, brutally violent antihero, upon receiving his own series in 1997 the character was slightly retooled as a parody of over-the-top action heroes and cosmic-level plots popular in the era. In comics, Deadpool has the ability to break the fourth wall, and knows he’s a comic character. Reynolds has confirmed the character will retain those characteristics, and be fully aware he’s in a movie.

The sequel/spinoff of 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set for release February 12, 2016. Tim Miller is directing from a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
