‘The Prophet’ Gets Release Date; Vivica A. Fox Back For ‘Independence Day 2’

GKIDS said today it will release Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet on August 7 in Los Angeles and New York before expanding it wide the following week. The animated pic based on the 1923 bestseller was spearheaded by Salma Hayek and features a narrative story written and directed by Roger Allers (The Lion King), with “chapters” based on Gibran’s poems designed and directed by animation directors including Tomm Moore, Joan Gratz, Bill Plympton, Nina Paley, Joann Sfar, Paul and Gaetan Brizzi, Michal Socha and Mohammed Harib. Hayek, Liam Neeson, Quvenzhané Wallis, John Krasinski, Frank Langella and Alfred Molina make up the voice cast. GKIDS has landed six Animated Feature Oscar nominations since forming in 2008, including two this year with The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya and Moore’s Song Of The Sea.

Roland Emmerich has booked another Independence Day actor to return for Fox’s sequel, adding Vivica A. Fox to the cast. She’ll rejoin Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman from the mega-tentpole 1996 original that made $811 million worldwide. Liam Hemsworth and Charlotte Gainsbourg have also joined up for the pic, which is eyeing a May production start and has a June 24, 2016, release date. Fox played Will Smith’s girlfriend Jasmine Dubrow in the original, but she won’t be snuggling up to Smith for the sequel; he says he is not returning.
