Kathy Griffin On ‘Fashion Police’ Exit, Lena Dunham’s Support

“I probably shouldn’t have taken the gig,” Kathy Griffin told Howard Stern this morning, reflecting on her time on the E! snark show. She elaborated on her exit on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show, noting that it was Joan Rivers’ daughter, Melissa Rivers, who approached her to join the show following her mother’s death. Griffin said Rivers told her that she was the only person that “her mother would truly have given her blessing to” and sealed the deal for Griffin to join the show.

Griffin tweeted Friday that she was exiting the show, and E! followed with a statement confirming the decision. She addressed her departure from the show Friday night in a comedy concert in Waterbury, CT, saying  it “wasn’t the right thing” for her. She denied reports to Stern that there was friction between her and follow former co-host Kelly Osbourne. Osbourne exited the show shortly after co-host Giulana Rancic made what many considered racially insensitive comments about Zendaya Coleman’s dreadlocks at the Oscars.

Griffin also gave a shout-out to Lena Dunham, saying she reached out to the Girls creator and star asking for help in crafting the statement announcing her Fashion Police exit that she posted on Twitter. “She helped me tremendously,” said Griffin.
