‘DIG’ Review: USA Network Event Series Not Very Deep, Says Dominic Patten

Debuting at 10 tonight on USA Network, the 10-episode series created by Gideon Raff and Tim Kring stays pretty shallow despite its international, geopolitical and historical reach and aspirations. Even with its attempts to dig into the mysteries and revelations deep beneath Jerusalem and the potentially world-ending plans of Christian and Jewish extremists, DIG is, as my video review above says, really just a plodding procedural dressed up in solemn garb.

The event series stars Harry Potter alum Jason Isaacs as a FBI agent working in the Holy City. He is joined by an Israeli detective, played by Ori Pfeffer, and the cast also includes Anne Heche, Richard E. Grant, Regina Taylor and Lauren Ambrose. All of them work the best they can with what they’ve got — which, unfortunately, often isn’t anything special. Still, there was drama off camera for DIG last year as USA had to pull production out of Israel when violence in the Gaza Strip flared up. Filming moved to Croatia and New Mexico. DIG is executive produced by the Homeland EP and Heroes creator as well as Gail Berman and Gene Stein and Keshet’s Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman and Karni Ziv.
