Jason Jones Officially Leaving ‘Daily Show’, Samantha Bee Remains – Update

UPDATE: Comedy Central says, “Jason Jones will be leaving The Daily Show With Jon Stewart later this year to begin production on his new series. Samantha Bee will remain with the show.”

PREVIOUS, 12:20 PM: Jason Jones just tweeted:

His announcement, not coincidentally, follows by just a few hours TBS’s announcement it has picked up the half-hour pilot from the veteran Daily Show correspondent and wife and Samantha Bee to series with a 10-episode order.

Today’s two announcements confirm sources’ reports that Jones was not a finalist to replace Jon Stewart, who recently startled-but-not-really when he announced he’d be leaving Comedy Central’s needle-moving late-night political commentary show sometime this year.

Jones recently filled in for Stewart when he was sick and ended up sharing guest host duties with wife Bee, but it did not go well — though, in fairness, it was a last-minute thing. Still, when Stewart took time off to go shoot Rosewater, it was John Oliver who got the fill-in gig. And Stephen Colbert took the plum post-Daily Show time slot — and Larry Wilmore got it next. Comedy Central has said it has a short list of candidates to replace Stewart.

jasonjonestbsJones’ as yet untitled TBS series is is inspired by his and Bee’s own experiences with family getaways. It follows a couple and their two young kids as they take a road trip to Florida. Jones plays unfiltered dad Nate, who packs his wife, Robin (Natalie Zea), along with their rebellious daughter Delilah (Ashley Gerasimovich) and simpleton son Jared (Liam Carroll), into the family car for what Nate is convinced will be the adventure of a lifetime. Every leg of their trip, however, is fraught with unforeseen disaster as they encounter one hellish turn after another. Plans call for each season of the darkly comedic show to chronicle a different family adventure.

Production is slated to begin this summer for a Q4 launch. Jones and Bee wrote the project and serve as executive producers. Steve Pink directed the pilot.
