Brandon Routh Gets ‘Lost In The Pacific’; MPA, Beijing Fest Partner: Global Briefs

Arclight Films and United Exhibitor Partners are launching 3D sci-fi adventure Lost In The Pacific. Brandon Routh and Zhang YuQi will star in director Vincent Zhou’s futuristic project about a group of elite passengers on board an inaugural luxury, transoceanic flight in 2020. Zhou co-wrote the script with Peter Cameron (Carnival Row). The creative team includes VFX supervisor Bruce Jones (The Italian Job, Star Trek), art director Ian Bailie (Atonement, Pride And Prejudice) and DP Scott Winig. The visual effects team will work at Stareast Digital Lab and with Venture 3D (Titanic 3D, The Chronicles Of Narnia). Lost In The Pacific begins shooting in the spring at Malaysia’s Pinewood Iskandar studio with release eyed for late 2015.

mpaThe 5th Beijing International Film Festival’s Beijing Film Market and the Motion Picture Association are teaming on a series of joint initiatives designed to champion emerging creative talent and incubate marketable film projects. A new MPA Grand Prize will be awarded to the winner of the MPA Film Workshop who will join winners from similar competitions at other MPA film workshops for a study tour of Hollywood studios to learn about professional filmmaking. They will also have the opportunity to pitch projects to studios for international co-production. Projects shortlisted from the Film Project Market will receive dedicated coaching from master filmmakers and industry veterans, and there are plans to integrate financial, legal, production, post-production and promotional resources from the Film Factor Market. Execs from Paramount, Oriental DreamWorks, and Village Roadshow Asia participated in 2014’s collaboration between the MPA and Beijing. The festival runs from April 17-20.

Timothy SpallAccused helmer David Blair is starting principal photography next week on Away, a feature drama to star Mr Turner‘s Timothy Spall and Sin City 2‘s Juno Temple. The pair play Joseph and Ria, two kindred spirits who forge an unlikely friendship. Matt Ryan, Hayley Squires and Terry Stone co-star. The script is by Roger Hadfield. Gateway Films’ Stone, Ratio Film’s Richard Turner and Mike Knowles are producers. Cinema Management Group is handling international sales.

60 minute makeoverOvation TV has licensed U.S. premiere rights to popular UK daytime series 60 Minute Makeover from ITV Studios Global Entertainment. The home interior design series will premiere on Ovation on March 10. In the reality program, a team of design specialists have one hour to transform three rooms.

20th tv distributionDavid Smyth, based in 20th Century Fox Television Distribution’s London office, has been promoted from VP Sales to Senior VP Sales and Development. As part of his new remit, Smyth will work with Fox production execs to explore co-production opportunities for new, original content to air in the U.S. and around the world. Smyth will also continue to license TCFTVD’s programming slate to the Netherlands, Scandinavia and Eastern European territories.

far from the madding crowd julie christieStudiocanal and Independent Cinema Office are releasing a newly restored version of director John Schlesinger’s 1967 classic Far From The Madding Crowd in UK theaters on March 13. The restoration process was overseen by the film’s cinematographer, Nicolas Roeg. This comes ahead of the release of Fox Searchlight’s Far From The Madding Crowd directed by Thomas Vinterberg and starring Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge. Julie Christie, Alan Bates, Peter Finch and Terrence Stamp starred in the earlier movie. The restored version premiered at the 2014 London Film Festival.

amc networks logoAMC Networks International has forged an agreement with DirecTV Latin America to launch AMC this month. The network will be available in seven Spanish-speaking countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela. AMC in Latin America features series such as Halt & Catch Fire and films from MGM, Paramount and Sony. The network recently launched on key pay-TV platforms in other regions throughout Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
