‘Bea Catcher Chronicles’ Books Adapted As Series By ABC Family & Atlas

ABC Family is developing Sketchy, a drama series based on Olivia Samms’ young-adult novels The Bea Catcher Chronicles. Samms will write the TV adaptation for Charles Roven’s Atlas Entertainment.

A crime procedural with a supernatural twist, Sketchy follows Bea Washington, an edgy, rebellious 18-year-old with a “skill” in which she can draw the truth out of people — literally. Shocked by what she sketches while observing the latest victim of a series of assaults on young women, Bea takes it upon herself to find the perpetrator before he strikes again. Samms will co-executive produce, Atlas Entertainment’s Alex Gartner will executive produce, and Jake Kurily will produce.

Roven’s Atlas Entertainment, whose feature portfolio includes American Hustle and the upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Warcraft and Suicide Squad, has been in expansion mode. The company recently launched its first TV series, Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, and started a management division. ABC Family has had success with adaptations of young-adult books; its flagship drama Pretty Little Liars was based on such novels.

The deal was brokered by CAA and Richard Thompson at BHDR. Samms is represented by CAA and publishing agent Lisa Gallagher.
