Rowan Atkinson To Star As Iconic Detective ‘Maigret’ For ITV

Rowan Atkinson (Bean; Johnny English) will star as Georges Simenon’s iconic French detective Jules Maigret in two stand-alone feature-length dramas for ITV, Maigret Sets A Trap and Maigret’s Dead Man, it was announced today.

Set in 1950’s Paris, the first of the two-hour long films will go into production in September 2015, produced by Ealing Studios and Maigret Productions Ltd (a Peters Fraser Dunlop Group company) and commissioned by ITV’s Director of Drama, Steve November, and Controller of Drama, Victoria Fea.

Stewart Harcourt (Love & Marriage, Treasure Island, Marple) has written the script. Exec Producers are Barnaby Thompson (St. Trinians) and Ben Latham-Jones (Midsummer Nights Dream) for Ealing Studios, John Simenon for Maigret Productions, and Stewart Harcourt. Jeremy Gwilt (Foyle’s War) will produce.

Georges Simenon’s Maigret first appeared in print in 1931. Simenon went on to write over 75 Maigret novels, featuring what would become the character’s trademark heavy coat and pipe, selling close to a billion books worldwide.

Maigret Sets A Trap is adapted from the novel Maigret tend un piège. Maigret’s Dead Man is based on Maigret et son mort.

“I have been a devourer of the Maigret novels for many years and I’m very much looking forward to playing such an intriguing character, at work in Paris during a fascinating period in its history,” said Rowan Atkinson.
