Deadline reported grosses on Jupiter Ascending on Sunday at $32.5M and that estimate rose on Monday to $33.8M in Warner Bros’ actuals. There are still Australia, China and Japan releases to come, but with an $18.7M opening domestically and with Fifty Shades Of Grey teed up to begin its day-and-date rollout tomorrow, Jupiter will be pressed to ascend major overseas heights. Elsewhere internationally, The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water soaked up $16.2M for a cume of $26.8M after two frames. According to Paramount, that’s 5.5 times bigger than the original Spongebob for the same bucket of markets. The next big players were The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 thanks to a strong China start; Disney’s Big Hero 6; and Fox’s Taken 3. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods And Kings rode past the $200M mark as it continues to play in Japan and wraps up in Brazil. Key territory results for those and other films are below, however this report is abridged following the overlap of the Berlin Film Festival and the BAFTAs on Sunday.
Looking ahead, Universal and Focus Features’ Fifty Shades Of Grey opens tomorrow with a premiere in Berlin as it also ties one on in Belgium and France. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s adaptation of the EL James bestseller then hits a host of markets on Thursday including Russia, Italy, Australia and Brazil, before undressing in the UK, the U.S. and most every other market on Friday. This film is not yet slated for China, and, given the subject matter, it’s unlikely it will get a release there. But that is also unlikely to be a key factor in this film’s fortunes given the massive awareness and wanna-see — advance ticket buys are through the roof internationally just as they are domestically.
Expanding next frame is Kingsman: The Secret Service in key markets like Russia, Korea and Brazil. The Colin Firth-starrer opened No. 1 in Australia and New Zealand this frame and carried on its strong performance in the UK where it was No. 2. The offshore cume is now $17.75M.
In local films, China’s Running Man clocked $8M for a $57M total and the animated Boonie Bears: Mystical Winter conjured $6.8M more for a $29M cume after two frames. In France, Pathé’s Papa Ou Maman?, about a separating couple vying not to have custody of their kids, adopted $3.85M in its debut.
Here’s a closer look at some of the major markets and titles internationally this weekend:
Jupiter Ascending played on 10,625 screens in 65 markets with Eastern Europe and Asia pulling a string of No. 1s. Russia was tops with $4.65M. (Russia was notably the 2nd biggest overseas territory for the Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas behind China.) Germany, which was Cloud Atlas’ third-biggest play (thanks in part to local director Tom Tykwer’s involvement), gave Jupiter Ascending a $1.9M start, slightly higher than the Sunday projections. China releases on March 6. Cloud Atlas made about $28M there.
The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water was the No. 2 movie of the international weekend with $16.2M from 25 territories. The cume is now at $26.8M after notable No. 1 starts in Brazil ($4.6M), Venezuela ($1.1M) and Spain ($1.9M) which ranks it as the biggest opening of the year. Spongebob floats to Russia this weekend in what should prove key counterprogramming to Fifty Shades.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 landed in China on Sunday with a $13.6M two-day take through Monday. The open was better than Catching Fire, although apples-to-apples comparisons are tough given that film bowed on a Thursday. Catching Fire didn’t exactly burn up the Middle Kingdom box office, earning about $28M there. Mockingjay looks poised to beat that and will have the standard four-week run as Chinese New Year approaches on February 19. The overseas cume is now $393.2M for a worldwide cume of $729M.
Big Hero 6 blasted past the $500M global mark with a $13.2M weekend — a $500K increase on Sunday projections. The global total is now over $505M. In its 16th week of overseas release it continued to play well in the UK where it maintained the No. 1 spot despite the arrival of Aardman and Studiocanal’s Shaun The Sheep Movie. It was still the top western movie in Korea (cume $16.3M). In Japan, it’s down to No. 2 with a $66.7M total after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles kicked into the market. French and Chinese releases are set for February 11 and 28, respsectively.
Taken 3’s special set of skills were on display with another $10.9M this frame from 64 markets. The international total is now $181.7M including the non-Fox markets. Colombia was a No. 1 open with the biggest debut of all the Taken franchise at $753K. Italy opens on Wednesday.
The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies picked up $8.75M in China in its 3rd weekend taking the total there to $113M. That far outpaces last year’s The Desolation Of Smaug which ended its Middle Kingdom run at about $75M. The total Hobbit weekend was $9.8M and the overseas cume is now $687M.
Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb dug up $7.8M more after coming alive in five new markets. In France, the open was No. 2 behind local pic Papa Ou Maman? with $2.8M from 630 screens. In all, NATM 3 is in 49 markets with a cume of $215.5M. Japan releases on March 20.
Kingsman: The Secret Service recruited $7.8M from four markets this frame, a strong result for the well-reviewed spy pic. Australia opened No. 1 with $3.6M at 252 dates. Per Fox, that’s more than double the opening of director Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass. Kingsman will roll out in 35 overseas markets next frame as well as North America where it will face off with Fifty Shades.
American Sniper targeted $6.6M from 2,150 screens in 30 markets, bringing the international cume to date to $79.5M. Clint Eastwood’s drama is playing in about 40% of international territories with such key markets as France, Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Japan and Germany still to go.
BAFTA darling The Theory Of Everything calculated $5.1M more in 44 territories for a total abroad of $59M. The worldwide box office total, including $32M in the U.S. and Canada, is $90.9M. The film has 12 territories to release via Universal.
Fox Searchlight’s Birdman, which picked up a cinematography BAFTA on Sunday, spread its wings in Italy this weekend with $1M and the highest per-screen average in the market. Overall, the cume for the frame was $3.76M in 48 markets and good for a total of $31.6M.
Into The Woods moved into Argentina and Mexico this frame, taking $1M in the latter – 11% below Les Misérables. Disney now has an international cume of $46.1M after adding a total $3.6M this weekend. The musical is playing in 23 territories, 62% of its international footprint.
Penguins Of Madagascar rang up $3.7M from 42 markets for an international cume of $262M. There were no new openings, although Poland held well in its 2nd session with $1.28M for a $5M total.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back, having moved into Japan, the film’s final market. The heroes on the half-shell were No. 1 with a two-day take of $2.1M, knocking Big Hero 6 to No. 2. The offshore total on the Paramount titles is now $286.7M.
Mortdecai also opened in Japan this frame with a $1.6M start on 344 screens. That was part of a $3.3M haul in 46 international markets. The cume on the Johnny Depp pic is now $16.3M.
Depp’s Tourist co-star Angelina Jolie has the next film on the chart. Unbroken grossed $3.2M in 51 territories for an international total of $42.7M. In China, it now has a 10-day take of $4.7M with eight territories still to go.
Exodus: Gods And Kings has passed the $200M mark at the overseas box office after earning a further $1.48M. In its 2nd week in a busy Japan, Ridley Scott’s epic grossed $740K to bring the total there to $4M while Brazil finished a very strong run at $23.6M. The international total is now $200.4M.
Blackhat, which Universal is releasing worldwide, grossed $1.2M in 37 territories for a total of $8.4M. In the frame, Germany was the top opener with $526K at 346 dates. The UK bows on February 20.
Ouija picked up $777K for a $48.2M total with no new openings.
Seventh Son, in 38 territories, added $598K. The Universal international total is $57.8. When China is factored in, that rises to $83.3M.
Jennifer Lopez-starrer The Boy Next Door added $477K in 11 territories. The early international total is $2.3M for Universal.
Russell Crowe’s The Water Diviner has been in release Down Under for 46 days and has a total of $13M there after adding $171K this frame. Universal is also releasing in 11 European markets later this year.
Finally, BAFTA champ Boyhood grossed $145K at 269 dates in 21 territories for a Universal total of $23M. Rollout and re-releases are ongoing throughout awards season. The BAFTA wins, including Best Picture, are destined to give the film a bump in the next weeks.
