Gkids Acquires Salma Hayek-Produced ‘The Prophet’

After debuting at Cannes and playing  at the Toronto Film Festival last year, the animated feature version of one of the bestselling books of all time is coming to more big screens this summer. Distributor GKIDS has acquired North American rights to Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet, the passion project of Salma Hayek.

“After seeing the incredible reaction to the movie in Cannes, Toronto and Doha, I’m very excited to be working with GKIDS in bringing Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet to North American audiences,” Hayek said. “This is one of the most personal projects I have ever done and I am extremely proud of it.”

Written and directed by Lion King helmer Roger Allers, The Prophet adaptation is produced by Hayek and José Tamez’s Ventanarosa Productions along with Clark Peterson, and Ron Senkowski. Steve Hanson, François Pinault, Jeff Skoll, Jonathan King, Julia Lebedev, Leonid Lebedev, Naël Nasr, Haytham Nasr, Jean Riachi, Julien Khabbaz and William Nix are executive producers. Participant Media and Doha Film Institute provided financing for the project.

The Oscar-nominated Frida actress is in the voice cast as is Liam Neeson, Quvenzhané Wallis, John Krasinski, Frank Langella and Alfred Molina, as my colleague Mike Fleming Jr revealed back in 2013.

“The film’s message about freedom and the power of human expression could not be more relevant and timely,” said GKIDS president Eric Beckman today.

The book has sold more than 100 million copies since its 1923 release.

This acquisition by GKIDS comes after the distributor snagged a duo of Best Animated Feature Oscar nominations with The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya and Song Of The Sea. It pulled off the same Oscar-double feat in 2012 with A Cat In Paris and The Secret Of Kells.
