ABC Picks Up 4 Drama Pilots

ABC added four more drama pilots: medical advocate drama The Advocate, from Sheldon Turner; Boom, the story of a modern energy boom in North Dakota, from producer Tony Krantz; The Adversaries, a legal soap from ER veteran David Zabel; and Kingmakers, a murder mystery from Revenge producer Sallie Patrick.

ABC also picked up seven comedy pilots tonight, including the NBA project, Dr. Ken starring Ken Jeong, Delores & Jermaine, The King of 7B, The 46 Percenters, The Brainy Bunch, a Johnny Knoxville/Victor Fresco project and a Judah Miller project. More on those in a bit in a separate post.

Written by Turner, the project was inspired by the real story of the Oscar-nominated writer’s former agent, Byrdie Lifson-Pompan. She was a top CAA literary agent whose roster included such heavyweights as Brett Ratner, Paul Haggis, Jim Sheridan and Jason Katims. She was misdiagnosed and her brain tumor went undetected until discovered by another doctor. She underwent surgery and fully recovered. Several years later, Lifson-Pompan, who also had other family members suffer from medical misdiagnoses, left agenting after 22 years to pursue a career as a medical advocate. She teamed with Valerie Ulene, a medical doctor and a health education specialist, to launch Clear Health Advisors, a healthcare consulting and case management company that helps patients navigate the healthcare system, including getting an accurate diagnosis and finding the right treatment.

Lifson-Pompan and Ulene will serve as consulting producers on the drama project, which centers on a tough, resourceful, type-A business woman at the top of her game who has a medical scare, only to be dangerously misdiagnosed, and experiences firsthand the hazards of our healthcare system. Shocking her friends and family, she leaves her career behind, becoming instead a brilliant and relentless advocate for anyone caught in the chaotic and ever-changing maze that is modern medicine. The project originally had David Marshall Grant attached as a writer.

This series tracks the epic pilgrimage of a young, ambitious couple to the oil fields of the Bakken seeking their fortune and a better life. It’s a classic tale with modern twists. As we follow their trials and tribulations in a modern day “Wild West”, they negotiate a colorful ensemble of roughnecks, grifters, oil barons, criminals and fellow prospectors against a stark and beautiful backdrop. Krantz and Pate executive produce, with Fisburne co-executive producing. The project was originally developed at ABC Studios for ABC several seasons ago and at one point was set up at USA before returning to ABC.

Written and executive produced by Sallie Patrick, Kingmakers, also from ABC Studios, centers on a young man whose sister is found dead during her freshman year at an elite Ivy League university. He adopts a new identity to infiltrate the school and its century-old secret society – consisting of privileged students, ambitious faculty, and high-profile alums – in order to investigate her death.

The four newly ordered drama pilots join gun-trade drama Runner, biblical drama Of Kings And Prophets, family dramedy Mix, true-crime drama LA Crime, terrorist drama Quantico and mystery Flesh and Blood aka untitled Jenna Bans.
