Gavin Smith Death: Jailed Drug Dealer Charged With Ex-Fox Executive’s Murder

Over two and a half years after the distribution executive went missing, John Creech was charged today with his murder. An arraignment for Creech, who is behind bars on an unrelated drug conviction, is set for February 2. The LA County DA’s Office said Deputy DA Bobby Grace with the Major Crimes Division will be prosecuting the case, which could see Creech in state prison for an additional 25 years if convicted.

The 57-year-old Smith disappeared late on the evening of May 1, 2012. His deteriorated body was discovered on October 26 last year in “a shallow grave,” as described by L.A. County Sheriff’s office, by hikers in Angeles National Forest. The case of the nearly 20-year vet of 20th Century Fox was declared a homicide in March 2013 after the former college basketball player’s black Mercedes 420E was found that February in a Simi Valley, CA storage locker. That locker belonged to one John Creech.

In jail at the time, Creech was declared the person of interest in the case by police. Convicted in September 2012 for 8 years on drug charges, Creech was not in jail at the time Smith disappeared and it was known that he and his wife knew the exec. The case was profiled on America’s Most Wanted in the fall of 2012. The former Fox executive was officially declared dead in May 2013.
