sophie kennedy clarkVisual artist Jake Chapman is set to make his first foray into television drama with Mills And Doom: The Marriage Of Reason And Squalor. Sky Arts has ordered the four-part twisted romance to air this summer starring Rhys Ifans and Sophie Kennedy Clark (Philomena). Chapman is best known as one half of the Turner Prize-nominated Chapman Brothers who have been dubbed the enfants terribles of Britart for their deliberately shocking work.

marriage of reason and squalorMills And Doom: The Marriage Of Reason And Squalor is adapted from Chapman’s 2008 debut novel of the same name (not the 1959 Frank Stella painting) which was a satire of the paperback romance. It follows Lydia (Kennedy Clark) whose dashing surgeon fiancĂ© has given her a desert island as a wedding present. She travels to the island to wait for him, but meets Helmut (Ifans), a reclusive and misshapen author. Helmut exerts a strange control over Lydia who, battling with her emotions, begins to suspect that all is not what it seems on the island. As she awaits the return of her beloved fiancĂ©, she begins to question everything around her and fights desperately to determine what is real — and what is her own fantasy.

Colin Vaines is producing for Morass Productions, and Andy Noble is co-producer. Ifans is repped by UTA, Kennedy Clark is with Gersh and United Agents in the UK.

The series will be shot in Barbados and West London for air this summer. It joins several other recent original commissions from Sky whose most ambitious drama to date, Fortitude, launches today.
