‘Miss Universe’ & ‘AFV’ Hit Ratings Highs, ‘Galavant’ & ‘Resurrection’ Up In Finales

On a quiet Sunday between the AFC Championship game and the Super Bowl viewers gravitated towards pageantry and silly videos.

NBC’s three-hour broadcast of the 63rd Annual Miss Universe Pageant (2.0/6 in 18-49, 7.6 million viewers) was the top program of the night in the demo and earned the beauty pageant its top 18-49 rating since 2009 (August 23) and largest audience since 2006 (July 23). Accurate year-to-year comparisons for the event are difficult as it has bounced around airing on different nights in season and off. (Last year, it was held on the lower-rated Saturday night in November, making for triple-digit ratings jumps this year).

The pageant, which featured a standout contestant, Miss Jamaica, a social media darling despite being snubbed for a more conventional winner, delivered NBC’s biggest non-Golden Globes viewership in the Sunday 9-11 PM slot in four years, since the premiere of the short-lived comic book-inspired drama The Cape. It propelled NBC to a top finish for the night in 18-49.

ABC’s 7-10 PM lineup rebounded from last week when it was bruised by the AFC Championship game. America’s Funniest Home Videos (1.7) shot up +89% to match its highest 18-49 rating and log its largest audience (7.3 million) in nearly 2 years. The season finale of Galavant (1.1) was up +22%. The fairytale musical comedy had a solid start followed by a so-so run but, given its often tough competition, favorable critical reception and a general good will towards it at ABC, a second installment is a considered a solid possibility.

That cannot be said for supernatural drama Resurrection (1.0) whose second season fell significantly from the first. Still, the series ended its sophomore run on a high note, up +25% from last week. At 10 PM, veteran Revenge (0.9) was even with last week.

CBS’s Undercover Boss (1.5) returned to Sunday, down -17% from its most recent episode on the night, which aired December 28. Back-to-back episodes of CSI averaged a 1.2 and a 1.3, in line with the 1.3 rating for the previous episode of the long-running crime drama, which will depart the schedule soon to make room for midseason drama Battle Creek. CBS was the most watched network of the night.

Fox’s comedies were down from their last originals. Soon to depart Mulaney managed a 0.4, not much to say about a number that low. The Simpsons (1.4) was down -30% from its Jan. 11 outing, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.2) was down -20%, Bob’s Burgers (1.2) was down -25%.
